Relieve Oneself by Traveling Through Parallels - 1Q84

Finally Mr. Spring-Tree-in-a-Village's book came out in Chinese. I was kind of waiting for the English version, you know Murakami thinks in English when he writes, but I need to get away from my world badly lately, so I got 1Q84 today anyhow.

1Q84 Today

While Aomame was listening to Janáček's Sinfonietta in an almost sound proof taxi, I was shielding myself from the disturbance of quietness with spa music playing through my over-the-head headphone. I was stuck on page 3 because of the most long lasting and satisfying sensation of scratching an itchy spot over my lower left leg. To be exact, it is where the anterior tibia muscle is, exactly 12 inches from the bottom of my left foot, .... ok you don't want to know but I'll continue in another direction.

Scratch my brain

This itchy spot started to appear a few years ago, doctor said it was not caused by fungus and its temporary, he prescribed antibiotics ointment, the itch keeps coming back however. One day I had an epiphany, the spot appeared for a reason perhaps psychosomatic. Suddenly I remember in my boy scout days I always hurt this area of my leg during outings. In one particular instant, I was crossing a river stream over large rocks, I slipped and my left leg was stuck between two rocks under water. That exact spot hurt like hell for almost a year. Even though fully recovered, I carry the pain and shamefulness of not being fit enough for activities so common for young boys. I didn't give up though, eventually became a troop leader and instructor.

That itchy spot now was the "painful" spot so light and seems insignificant yet lingering. Today that spot lingers as a sign of distress and at the same time a relief mechanism I can make use of. I use it to reduced brain activity in areas associated with unpleasant sensory experiences and memories, I made it a bodily chronic itch for the benefit of scratching away problems, scratching to the point of drawing blood to relief.

1984 was the year I began the transformation from self-doubt. 3 pages of 1Q84 brought me back to the parallel realms I was so good traveling across.

Norwegian Wood - disappointed

I really don't understand why this book sold 4.4 million copies in Japan. I like Murakami's more distorted/ out of this world novels much much more. This seems like a simple love story to me and never stoke a chord. I don't think Murakami is particularly proud of this work at all, it will be very interesting to see him writing another unreal/darker/deeper novel covering the journeys of these same characters behind the rather simple love/sex story . Yes, lots of symbols were used again and again but they served no purpose in this very book IMHO.

Synopsis: "Like many of Murakami Haruki's English reading fans, I read A Wild Sheep Chase and Dance Dance Dance without knowledge that the former book was the third in a trilogy and that the latter book was an addition that came a few years later. However, if the reader pays closer attention to A Wild Sheep Chase one can really see that the characters within the book seem to be established and that they already have their personal histories which are not coming completely new from the pages of A Wild Sheep Chase. Almost a year after picking up A Wild Sheep Chase for the first time, I read Jay Rubin's highly informative book Haruki Murakami & the Music of Words and learned about Murakami's first two novels: Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973 both of which had been translated into English by Alfred Birnbaum.

Hear the Wind Sing begins with the narrator, aged 29, talking about writing and how difficult it was for him to finally put down words on paper. It took him eight years in fact to put down his thoughts on the summer of 1970 and the people he was involved with during that year. Why 1970? 1970 was the year after the student activist group the Zenkyoto was forced out of the building they had commandeered and soon afterwards those who had been its greatest supporters were sucked back into the system to become automatons of mainstream society. For Murakami, the destruction of the student movement left a deep wound in his being and it pained him to see his fellows go to a more conservative, rightist path.

However, within the being of the narrator it might be hard to find a politically charged individual. This is instead found within the being of the narrator's best friend the Rat. Yet, the Rat's sense of aggravation towards modern society is quite impotent, so he instead fills his emptiness with beer and liquor. The Narrator, a more introspective fellow, spends his time consumed in the books of dead writers, the memories of his dead girlfriend, and pursuing the girl with four fingers on her left hand.

At the time he wrote this thin tome, Murakami owned a jazz bar called the Peter Cat and had little time for actual writing so his sentences within this volume tended to be quite pithy. Also, the short, pithy styles of Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan influenced his writing. The book itself is more a collection of vignettes than one coherent novel and the order of the book was originally quite different that the final version.

While it does not hold a candle to some of his later works, Murakami's first novel is quite important in his body of work and it shows his early interest in such subjects as language, memory, China, and the student movement. Definitely a book worth seeking for the Murakami fan, hopefully, one day, along with Pinball, 1973, it will be given a wider release to Murakami's English reading fans." (by Michael W.)

I know one thing... I truly wish to see it. Soon.

Not since Tony Takitani has a filmmaker come along who has masterfully captured the essence of Murakami's spirit of storytelling and psychological beauty. I just hope that Logevall will succeed in making a film that is not too obscure that it will be doomed to the fate of being prematurely cast-aside by main-stream critics. Only a matter of time will tell.

What a beautiful story to make into a film adaptation as well.
